Easy Holiday Cleaning Plan
The key to avoiding so much holiday chaos, especially in cleaning, is to start early and create a game plan. By doing this, you are giving yourself more peace and freedom to enjoy the season with family and friends.
The following is a simple holiday cleaning schedule that comes with a short checklist that you can use to give you more ease as you go through the seasonal housekeeping procedure. Of course, there can be other ways to do it, so see and choose what works for you.
Day 1: The first day is about making an honest evaluation of your house. Walk through your place with a visitor’s eye, and focus on those areas where you will receive your visitors and have them stay like the entryway, living room, guest room, etc. Take note of those imperfections that you see. Chances are these are the same things that your guests will notice. Naturally, you already know what areas to clean, but taking this step will enable you to take an honest look at your space. It may surprise you.
Before diving into action, plan to include the whole family in cleaning. Look into this plan, and assign tasks to every member according to capabilities. Involving everyone not only makes the job lighter, but also gives the family a sense of togetherness, sweet memories, and a whole lot of fun this season.
Checklist
- Front porch
- Entryway
- Living room
- Bathrooms
- Guest rooms
- Kitchen & Dining
Day 2: Today is the official start of the holiday cleaning. Set about with a warm-up cleanup. Doing this will get your mind and body ready for the bigger tasks ahead. Begin working on those items such as baseboards, windows, curtains, and bedspreads that are noticeable, but do not get dirty so often or for a long time.
Checklist
- Wash windows. Wipe down doors.
- Damp-mop baseboards
- Launder and press (if needed) curtains and bedcovers
Day 3: It’s now time to tackle the more challenging areas, the bedrooms and the bathrooms. Start deep cleaning those rooms that visitors will be using. Do not forget to include in today’s list your medicine cabinet and drawers (Some guests do snoop around).
Checklist
- Declutter the bedrooms and bathrooms. (You may donate these things or simply store them out of sight.)
- Straighten out the bedrooms. (Tip: Sort out magazines. Leave out some in the living room or guest room for the holiday visitors to read.)
- Organize cabinets and drawers.
Day 4: The entryway is the first thing that friends and family see when coming to visit. Make sure to tidy up this space, so it will be ready to welcome guests.
Checklist
- Clear the walkway by picking up and storing shoes, umbrellas, coats, and hangers.
- Designate a place for guests’ coats and shoes.
- Wash or spot-clean rugs.
Tip: Place poinsettia or other holiday flowers to welcome loved ones and make them feel the holiday spirit even more.
Day 5: Today’s agenda concentrates on the kitchen. This part is heavily used more during this season than the others especially if you plan on entertaining guests the whole season. Prepare your cookroom for action!
Checklist
- Clean countertops, stovetop surfaces, and grates.
- Clean out the fridge and deodorize. Make space for holiday food and leftovers. Dust the top of the fridge.
- Wipe down appliances and kitchen cabinets.
Day 6: This time is sweep and dust day. The items here get dusty often, so it is advisable to have this routine regularly.
Checklist
- Sweep the floors and dust all the surfaces that need dusting like bookshelves, frames, ceilings, fans, etc.
Day 7: The last day is dedicated to polishing. After this day, you may now freely and happily decorate your home for the season!
Checklist
- Wipe down doorknobs and handles.
- Empty trash bins and put on fresh liners.
- Clean the mirrors.
- Bring out fresh towels, aprons, fresh hand soap, and paper towels in the bathrooms and the kitchen.
- Straighten out sofa cushions and pillows.
- Vacuum carpets and dry-mop wood floors.
- Damp-mop the floors.
Now that you’re done with all the major and minor cleanups, we are giving a few more tips for maintenance and some quick solutions or touch-ups.
- Have a small vacuum on hand for crumb cleanup.
- Keep an all-purpose cleaner as a quick cleaning essential. (Make sure this is out of the children’s reach.)
- Window wipes come in handy, so smudges go away in no time.
- Prepare disinfectant wipes to clean commonly touched surfaces like doorknobs.
- Get a toilet brush with biodegradable pads, so you can easily brush and then flush the pads away.
- Electrostatic cleaning cloths are helpful when doing the on-the-spot dusting.
